Massive Traffic in Lagos Express way due to Lagos State University convocation event
For graduates and their families, the Lagos State University (LASU) holds its annual convocation ceremony on June 6, 2024; a day of joy. Besides being an important day for many people, this event brought about a lot of traffic disruptions in the surrounding areas. It was such kind of difficulties like these that left the gridlock in question with many commuters remaining ontoward investment as well as towards signifying that it is not every time that road work can be carried out successfully in urban centers such as Lagos.
Thousands of people including students, their relatives members university staffs and dignitaries attended the graduation ceremony on LASU’s main campus at Ojo. In terms of sheer numbers, there were so many people from all walks of life who went to the school thereby necessitating a huge number vehicles plying through local streets which overwhelmed them completely. Prominent among the major roads affected by these congestion included Lagos-Badagry Expressway that serves as an important commuting route between Lagos mainland and western periphery.Even before sunrise motorists got caught up within this monstrous traffic jam. People using Lagos-Badagry expressway found themselves perplexed with rows upon rows of stuck vehicles running into miles going both ways. The choke point was made worse by other factors such as: narrowness of local streets, few choices for alternative routes and ineffective traffic control measures.
To help reduce the traffic jam, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers were deployed to assist in directing vehicles and curbing congestion. Nevertheless, a large number of cars as well as limited infrastructure to handle such a large amount of movement prevented their work from being done effectively. The afternoon stretched out for many hours for some commuters who said they spent several minutes only but found themselves in gridlock.
The convocation ceremony itself featured thousands of graduates from various disciplines commending the achievements of others whom they have been with through thick and thin. Amongst those present at this occasion included Lagos State Governor and other dignitaries who made presentations; in addition there was an award presentation programme, speeches as well as cultural performances. On the other hand, despite the terrible state of traffic on roads leading to this academic institution, its campus radiated joy and triumph.
This alleviation has been brought about by years of hard work and self-denial that many families engaged themselves into thus making it possible for their children to attend college or university. Graduates donned in their academic gowns collected diplomas with pride while posing for photographs with friends and relatives looking very proud. The day had its own challenges though; however, nobody could mistake the feeling of fulfillment that filled the air.
About the traffic situation, some attendees complained. “I know it is a special day for all of us but ah- the road was impassable” said Tunde who had a child at LASU. “We left home early but spent almost half of the day in traffic. These kinds of events need to be better coordinated.”
There was also anger from other commuters not involved in the convocation. A local business person, Amaka complained, “Today there is no convocation at all.” “Just trying to go to my shop and I have lost most part of this morning because of this traffic. It’s just so annoying.”
This event created a problem when it comes to Lagos management of events and infrastructure planning. However, managing its transportation networks is an immense challenge for Lagos as one among Africa’s fastest growing cities. Having such big occasions like LASU convocations within an overstrained system can result in extensive disruption across board.
More proactive measures have been suggested to manage future events in the aftermath of traffic chaos. Other suggestions include, enhanced communication with the public on teh upcoming happenings, improved coordination between event organizers and traffic management authorities as well as investment on infrastructure upgrade to cater for large crowds.
The LASU Convocation was a landmark for the university and its graduates despite the traffic challenges. For those students it signified an end to one era and commencement of another filled with new opportunities and obstacles. Many will remember this day with elation and pride even though city is still trying to deal with practical issues connected to organizing such big gatherings.
Addressing Lagos’ traffic problems effectively remains a vital task as it continues to grow and transform. Events like that of LASU convocation are glimpses into some aspects of life in megacity where happiness meets sorrow at every point. Through improved planning and better coordination, there is hope that subsequent events can be celebrated without causing too much mayhem.
